What is the difference between mastopexy and breast augmentation?

However, it is possible to combine mastopexy with breast augmentation if the aim is simultaneously to lift and increase the volume of the breasts.

What are the different mastopexy techniques?

Different mastopexy techniques can be used, depending on the degree of breast ptosis (sagging breasts) and your specific needs. Periareolar mastopexy involves a circular incision around the areola (the pigmented area around the nipple). It is generally used for cases of mild breast ptosis. It slightly lifts the breasts and reduces excess skin. Inverted T (or anchor) mastopexy produces an inverted T-shaped incision, comprising an incision around the areola, a vertical incision from the areola to the fold under the breast, and possibly a horizontal incision in the fold under the breast. This technique is used for more severe cases of breast ptosis, and enables the breasts to be lifted significantly and remodeled more completely. This is the most commonly used technique. To avoid a horizontal scar, your surgeon may prefer vertical mastopexy, also known as L-shaped mastopexy. This technique involves a circular incision around the areola and a vertical incision running from the areola to the fold under the breast. This technique is only suitable for cases of moderate ptosis. Internal mastopexy is the least invasive. It involves creating internal stitches to lift the breast tissue without removing excess skin. It is, however, only suitable for cases of mild to moderate ptosis, but offers faster recovery with less visible scars. The choice of mastopexy technique will depend on a number of factors, including the degree of breast ptosis, the size and shape of your breasts, skin quality, your personal expectations and your plastic surgeon’s recommendations.

Procedure for mastopexy/breast lift

Before the operation

The first consultation with your plastic surgeon is essential to assess your situation and expectations, and to choose the right technique. At the end of this first consultation, you will be given a detailed estimate for your procedure.

During the operation

Mastopexy is performed under general or local anesthesia with sedation.

To begin with, the surgeon makes the necessary incisions, depending on the technique chosen. Incisions can vary in size and shape, depending on the degree of breast ptosis and the technique used (e.g. periareolar, inverted T, vertical, etc.).

In the second stage, the surgeon removes the excess skin and reshapes the breast tissue to lift and firm the breasts. If breast augmentation is also planned, breast implants will be inserted at this stage.

The nipples will be repositioned higher on the breasts to create a harmonious appearance.

Finally, the incisions are closed with absorbable sutures.

After the operation

After surgery, bandages and a compression bra will be placed to support the breasts and facilitate healing. After an appropriate period of monitoring in the recovery room, you will be allowed to go home.

Follow your plastic surgeon’s post-operative instructions carefully to achieve the best possible result and minimize discomfort. The recovery period may vary from person to person, but it is generally recommended to avoid strenuous physical activity for a few weeks and to wear a supportive bra for a while.

Results

Immediately after surgery, your breasts will be wrapped in bandages and supported by a compression bra. At this stage, you may already notice an immediate improvement in breast position and shape, but there may be some swelling and bruising.

In the weeks following surgery, you will notice a gradual reduction in swelling and bruising. Your breasts will begin to stabilize and take on their final shape as healing progresses.

After a few months, you’ll notice a marked improvement in the appearance of your breasts. Swelling will have diminished significantly and scars will begin to fade. The results of mastopexy will be more obvious, and you’ll be able to enjoy firmer, more toned, lifted breasts.

The final results of mastopexy may take several months to a year to stabilize completely. At this stage, your breasts will have reached their definitive position and shape, and scars will continue to fade gradually.
